Reclaim Your Attention

Every generation thinks attention is getting worse.

Yesterday it was television. Today, it's the doomscroll.

Short-form content is training us to abandon stories halfway through. The most cinephile theater chain in America just handed every customer a phone mid-film, fired human beings, and called it progress. That was a mistake.

AMC can go the other direction. Not just a theater — a rare space where an escape to full attention is the point.

In a world of highlights, AMC offers the whole story.

  • Post-pandemic, movie theaters face declining attendance driven not only by streaming, but by evolving consumer habits. Entertainment has become fragmented. Audiences are conditioned to skim rather than commit, but they are aware of that. AMC must reassert the value of the theatrical experience in a culture optimized for distraction

  • Young adults say they love movies.
But most of the time, they experience stories while multitasking. Scrolling, reacting, half-watching on the couch.

    They publicly joke about “brainrot.”
Privately, they feel their attention slipping.

    They want immersion back.
They just don’t have many spaces designed for it.

  • Attention isn’t dead.
    It’s just constantly interrupted now.

Alamo Drafthouse has leaned into this. They fired people to put mobile ordering in their theatres. This was a misstep. It cooled the theatre experience. It took the cinephile for iPad toddler.

    AMC should do the opposite.

  • A campaign centered around a rare and sacred home to enjoy uninterrupted storytelling.

A dramatization the novel distraction as a literal character - “the “Attention Thief” - who interrupts cinematic moments the way our phones interrupt us daily.

Inside an AMC theater, the attention thief loses their power. At the AMC, you can finish your thought.

  • In the most attended AMC theatres around the country, hosted events before big premieres, the Oscars, and other cultural events where movie fans socialize, engage, and do the whole theatre experience the way the feel it’s should be.

Bring extra draw with the other staples that create the feeling we imagine: arcade games, popcorn machines, merch handouts.

No phone needed, and no phone wanted.
